One of our core aims this year, as every year, is to enhance the Literacy skills of our students here at Cwmcarn High School.
“Literacy is a key national, regional and local priority. The acquisition and development of literacy skills by learners is vital for success and improvement across the system”

What is Literacy?
- Literacy consists of three component parts - Reading, Writing and Speaking/Listening - and these are essential to master for lifelong learning.
- Currently, all KS2 and 3 learners undertake all-Wales tests in Years 6, 7, 8 and 9 assessing a child’s “Reading”.
- A new National Literacy Framework underpins the delivery of all subjects across the curriculum.
- English at KS3 and KS4 involves the testing of the three attainment targets prescribed above.
- The majority of GCSE subjects now reserve a certain proportion of marks for SPaG – Spelling and Grammar.
- Success at AS/A Level depends upon the acquisition of core Literacy and Numeracy skills.
“Reading is to the mind, what exercise is to the body”
Joseph Addison
