Year 10 assessment week -
Geography Department
| Welcome to the Geography Department |
The Geography department at Cwmcarn strives to provide all learners with a broad understanding of issues and places in the world around them; as well as equip them with a range of skills that will be useful in later life. We believe that the topics are exciting and help to stimulate a natural interest in both the local area and the wider world. |
At Key Stage 3 the curriculum is split into several themes which are summarised for each year group below: |
| Year 7 | |
During the Autumn term, learners will begin by studying a theme called ‘The Town and Country'. Within this unit learners look at what Geography is, where Cwmcarn is located in the world, patterns of crime both locally and globally and how cities i.e. Cardiff are changing. In the Spring term, learners concentrate on a theme called ‘The Rich and Poor World' where they compare a poor country (Kenya) with a rich country (USA). The final topic in the summer term is ‘The Physical World' where learners look at how the sea shapes the land and how humans affect the coast. |
| Year 8 | |
| During the Autumn term, learners will begin by studying a theme called ‘Threatened Environments'. Within this unit learners look at three environments under threat – tropical rainforests, coral reefs and the Brecon Beacons. They even get to experience holding many real animals that live in the rainforest. In the Spring term learners concentrate on a theme called ‘People as Consumers' where they study tourism in Mallorca and the impact of global companies e.g. Mc Donalds. The final topic in the summer term is ‘People and the Planet' where learners look at population, migration and the Geography of Disease | |
| Year 9 | |
| During the Autumn term learners will begin by studying a theme called ‘The Hazardous World'. Within this unit learners study a range of natural hazards – volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, avalanches and floods. In the Spring and Summer term learners concentrate on a theme called ‘Tomorrow's Citizens' where they study Climate Change, Fairtrade, recycling and an enquiry into the local area. Part of the topic involved in Fairtrade even involves a tasty visit to Cadbury World. | |

| What our learners say: | |
Mary Phillips (Year 8): “ In gneral I enjoy my Geography lessons and would not miss them for the world. The lesson I enjoyed the most was when the rainforest animals came in because I loved all the animals, even the snakes and wanted them to return!” |
Mia Young (Year 8): “I really love Geography because I want to travel the world when I leave school. I used to think Geography was just continents and where countries are but it's not, it's much more fun and interesting! This year I have loved Geography more! In Geography I think I've learnt the most by watching the movie clips and then annotating pictures as that helps me to visualise it better. I also like the drama and the creative posters. I like the written work because I do it in colour so it makes my books look nice and pretty! |
Owen Jenkins (Year 8) “I enjoy every Geography lesson because we always do different types of lessons.” |
Allana Sparkes (Year 8) “The thing that I really enjoyed was when we made models out of clay and when we had the rainforest animals come in and we were able to hold them without them hurting us. I also enjoyed the drama we did last year and competitions we did to win prizes! I love doing the assessments especially the poster ones because they need lots of colour. All the teachers are lovely and amazing and always make the lessons fun!” |
