Mathematics is a subject studied by every learner at KS3 and KS4. Numeracy skills are vital for many aspects of adult life and employers and educational establishments consider a good qualification in Mathematics as vital for many courses or jobs. It encapsulates a multitude of skills and knowledge which learners develop throughout their time in Cwmcarn. To succeed in maths you will need to develop problem solving skills, communication skills and the ability to transfer knowledge and skills between different areas of the subject.
We do not use calculators in year 7 so that pupils can develop their mental arithmetic skills. Learners are allowed to use a scientific calculator from year 8 onwards although we will continue to work without one whenever possible. We aim to prepare our pupils for using numbers in everyday life as well as achieving to their full potential in examinations.

Some of the topics that we teach in year 7 include working with decimals and fractions, drawing and calculating angles, 3D shapes, statistics and basic algebra. Learners will also be regularly given problem solving activities to do alongside or independent to the topics they are covering.
The department is staffed by an experienced group of dedicated subject specialists who are always available to assist any pupil that needs a helping hand. We pride ourselves on the extra –curricular help that is available to pupils especially when they are approaching exams. Every Year 11 pupil has the opportunity to attend a weekly revision class after school and these are usually very popular. There is usually a large uptake in learners continuing the subject to A level within the school and again the support offered here is very strong. It is not just the exam classes, however, that are offered extra support and there is an open door policy throughout the department. Most teachers are available during the dinner times to help any learners. There are also other clubs available such as a maths games club and the 24 game club. We usually run a trip to techniquest during maths week for one year group and the sixth form often compete in the University of Glamorgan Maths pop quiz. |
