Welcome to Music at CHS
The Music Department provides excellent opportunities for all learners regardless of their previous musical experiences. As well as an exciting and challenging music curriculum, the Departments’ calendar is filled with Concerts, community events and trips to encourage the many talented learners of Cwmcarn High School to become involved with music beyond the classroom.

Success breeds success!!!

We are extremely fortunate to be based in the Performing Arts Centre where there are two fully equipped music rooms, two practise rooms and a beautiful Theatre. We gained our best results ever at KS3 and GCSE in 2013.

•  97% achieved Level5+ at the end of KS3

•  94% gained A*-C at GCSE level ( 30% achieved A*/A grades and an average 20% Value Add at this level)

•  100% A*-E at A Level

•  Boys perform as well as girls across the Key Stages in Music

Music Tuition .

Cwmcarn High School is currently one of the few local secondary schools in CBC to provide learners with FREE music tuition . A dedicated team of seven tutors support the Music Department and learners receive 25 minute lessons on a weekly basis. Learners are regularly work towards and are entered for:

•  Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) ,

•  Trinity Guildhall,

•  Rockschool

•  London College of Music Examinations

Our annual pass rate in these exams has been 100% in the past four years.

When learners are of a suitable standard, they are expected to participate in Choirs and Ensembles in school and at county level.

Extra Curricular Events

The extended curriculum forms a very important role. There are lots of groups and ensembles to get involved with, regardless of whether learners are receiving extra tuition in school.

•  Orchestra

•  Brass Ensemble

•  Woodwind Group

•  Big Band

•  Choir

Concerts & Community Events

music-2 The Music Department has nurtured strong links with the wider community of Cwmcarn and Abercarn. We support the Royal British Legion and have hosted its’annual Festivals of Remembrance in the Performing Arts Centre and provided trumpet players for The Last Post in both services at the cenotaphs in Abercarn and Cwmcarn on Remembrance Sunday. We also support the Rotary Clubs’ Young Musician of the Year Competition.

Christmas is a very important time of year for the Music Department. We are always given a warm welcome when we participate in a Christmas Service at Zion Baptist Church in Cwmcarn and the Christmas Concert and Carol Service mark the start of the festive season for many in the school. Last year we were delighted to share our celebrations with the Caerphilly Male Voice Choir

We work closely with local primary schools to perform in joint fundraising ventures and many learners support Caerphilly Borough Council ensembles leading in concerts in prestigious venues such as St David's hall in Cardiff.

Each year many learners are entered for the Caerphilly Borough Council's Young Musician of the Year competition. In 2013, Jordan Day-Williams won his age category in the Brass Competition.

Year 7 & KS3

At Key Stage 3 learners are encouraged to investigate a wide range of musical styles and to develop their Performing, Composing and Listening skills. Each half term we focus on a particular topic. At the start of their school journey learners explore The Elements of Music which are the building blocks to improving their musical skills

Unit 1

Learners develop good singing technique using tricky tongue-twisters, mental maths teasers, rounds and breathing exercises. They use the skills to improve performances of songs such as ‘The Climb' (Miley Cyrus), ‘Make You Feel My Love' (Adele) and ‘Halleujah' (as seen in ‘Shrek')   music-5

Getting Practical…..

From the first term in Year 7, learners are actively involved in practical music making through performance and composing. Year 7 are currently devising, performing, recording and evaluating their own Graphic Scores based on a theme of Day & Night.
