Results from 2013
86% A* - C at KS4
91% Level 5+ at KS3

During KS3 the focus is on the development of the key skills for science and also development of numeracy and literacy within science lessons.

Most lessons will allow learners to develop group work and independent learning skills. These skills are reinforced during all lessons with the focus being on learner driven activities.

Learning is continually assessed during KS3 and learners are involved in setting targets for progression within science.

  Planning

•  Find evidence, information and ideas

•  Methods and strategies

•  Predict

•  Fair testing

•  Determine success criteria

Developing

•  Observe and measure

•  Monitor progress

•  Communicate findings

•  Review findings

•  Explaining

•  Conclusions and decisions

Reflecting

•  Review success

•  Evaluate learning

•  Link learning

KS4

Within KS4 there are two options for learners to study within science:-

The traditional route of GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics

•  Examinations during the two years (75%)

•  Content driven

•  Controlled assessment (25%)

•  Aimed at learners who wish to follow Science to degree level for specific roles e.g. Biochemist/Doctor/Dentist/Pharmacist/ Physicist

Vocational BTEC Science

•  Coursework controlled

•  Assignments with clear success criteria

•  Opportunities to achieve grades from A* to C (GCSE equivalent)

•  Continual assessment so learners know where they are and how to progress to next level

•  Aimed at learners who prefer coursework lead activities and may wish to pursue a vocational job within the science industry e.g. dental nurse/science technician/ veterinary nurse
